Where: Chesedonia
When: After Arche returns from meeting Hilda.
Author(s): [livejournal.com profile] atelierjoh and [livejournal.com profile] tacos_of_doom
Warnings: The usual when these two are involved. Also, an apology, this took way too long to get up. :(

When Arche arrived back in Chesedonia, she was reluctant to return to the inn ... however, after that meeting, she felt like she needed to lay down. She bit her lip, not even bothering to hover around on her broom as she walked through the city, her destination decided.

That woman ... there was no denying the resemblance to her mother. That face was her mother's. Arche had been too young when her mother died to remember her face, but her dad always kept constant reminders by way of pictures. She knew what her mother looked like.

... and that woman had her mother's face.

But that was impossible ... wasn't it? If her mother was dead, she couldn't return. Arche was confused. And this, on top of everything else, only confused her more. She just wanted right now to curl into bed and forget about everything; how she couldn't remember anything from when she was 'sick,' how Chester was being uncharacteristically nice, and how this woman looked so much like the mother who couldn't be around in her childhood.

As uncharacteristically nice as that companion was, he was quickly losing his patience in the desert heat and was becoming more characteristically rough; whether that would be a blessing or a curse would remain to be seen. Hearing the door across from the hall, Chester first dismissed the sound considering he heard footsteps, and it was sooner that Arche would fly on her broom through the window than use the door. However, catching a glimpse of bright pink hair made his reconsider... it was unusual for her to make such an innocuous and silent entrance.

Knocking on her door, Chester opened it a crack, but didn't catch a glimpse of her face. A tiny box in his pocket, he doubted he would be able to use it anytime soon, but it was for a super special situation... if he ever hit rock bottom, maybe, especially since he already knew the answer should she ever actually see the contents of the box. Yeah, it would be better to keep it tucked away. "You still wanna be left alone?"

Once entering her room, she had immediately gone to her bed and flopped herself down onto it, curling up into something of a ball. She was working on trying to will herself to sleep so she could just forget about everything for the moment, but then ...

... but then she heard that familiar voice. And yeah. She did want to be left alone. But she didn't feel like telling him that. So, her only reaction was to curl up into a tighter ball on her bed.

Seeing Arche like that made Chester bite his lower lip; he was out of character, and now so was she. If his sister had still been alive, would he still be as helpless as he is now to help her if she were ever in trouble? Chester cast his glance to the floor, his eyebrows furrowing. "Could I at least get you anything, like a glass of water or a snack or something? Come on, Arche; talk to me. It's fine if you don't want to deal with something right at this moment, but... dealing with alone isn't like you." Or was it? How well did he really know Arche? Chester was beginning to grow afraid of the answer, much like he didn't know anything about Rhea until it was too late. Come on, won't you share some of your pain with me? A hypocritical thought crossed his mind.

Just go away. Go away, go away, go away.

Arche's only response was simply to pull the covers over her head. She didn't want to deal with this right now. She didn't want to deal with anything right now. Maybe if she was quiet for long enough he'd take the hint and go.

She won't even talk to me...? Chester was hurt, which of course then began to manifest itself into annoyance, and finally irritable anger. Tried to be nice, didn't work. Not that being an asshole would work, either, but Chester was running out of tools at this point. Stepping into the room, the door made a fairly loud 'THUD', and Chester approached Arche's bed. "Okay, Arche, what the Hell is wrong with you? I don't care how confused and PMSy you are right now, but if we're going to be traveling together, why can't you even make a damned effort to have things come along smoothly?! You're being a damned selfish brat, and if you're going to be like this, I'm not going to babysit you anymore!"

She didn't want to talk to him, or anyone.

And yet, in true Chester fashion, he just had to come barging into her room, yelling at her about being selfish, and, and .. that did it. Something in her snapped, as it always seemed to whenever she was around him, and she threw the covers off of her, sitting up in bed and glaring at him with an intensity she saved just for him.

"Babysit me?! I don't need to be babysat! I'm nineteen years old, Chester, I'm not a damn kid anymore, and I'm sick of you treating me like one! But you know, even if I'm not a kid anymore, I can still act like one from time to time, okay?! We wouldn't even be traveling together like this if not for you going all gung-ho and telling Rose that we were just going to leave!" She swung her legs over the bed and stood, walking over to him and trying to get right up in his face ... not that it helped much. Arche was tiny.

"You wanna know what's wrong with me?! FINE! I'm away from everything I ever knew because of a stupid mistake on my end, and then your little involvement with telling Rose 'Oh hey, we're just going to leave now' and effectively banishing us from Engeve, and then we bicker like insane every step of the way to Lorelei-knows-where, and then I apparently get sick," she said the word 'sick' with her hands mimicking quotation marks, "and wind up under your care again, and now you're being really weird and oddly nice to me and I can't make heads or tails of it, and I feel like you're hiding something and not telling me because I wouldn't be able to handle it, well, newsflash! I'm not the little kid that you think I am! And now, I'm back here after seeing a woman who looks almost identical to my mother!"

Arche was left panting heavily. During her rant, she forgot to breathe. When she could breathe again, she took a deep breath and looked away.

"I'd like to see you act normal after seeing someone who looked exactly like your dead mother."

That shut Chester up.

Staring at the panting Arche for several seconds, he turned to face the door. He didn't have either of his parents, so he knew that Arche's situation wasn't pleasant, to say the least. But... her dead mother?

Holding up his hand, trying to reach for Arche, he pulled away. She wouldn't make eye contact. "I'm sorry." He swallowed his pride. "I... I'm sorry." He knew he didn't have to apologize for her seeing her dead mother (which was... an interesting issue, to say the least), but she was right. He was the problem to a lot of the crap they've been through lately. He couldn't deny that. He was trying to protect her, but he was hurting her... how ironic. Clenching his fists and teeth, he wasn't sure what else to say.

The apology caught her off-guard. Arche bit her lip, and unclenched her fists. She still couldn't look at him, but she tried. She really was trying.

"Hey, um ... that was uncalled for." She meant her outburst. She knew he was trying his best, she just had a lot of pent-up frustrations that hadn't really come out at all until now.

"I just need some ... yeah. Need some time alone." She couldn't even seem to get out what she wanted to say. Man, this was awkward ...

Arche didn't like it when Chester apologized. She was glad that he had the decency enough to do so, of course, but it always left her not knowing what to say afterward. It was weird.

Don't go away. Not again. Chester wanted to say those words, but he couldn't. They had their rough patches, (really rough patches), and he promised Rhea. Hell, he promised himself that he'd take care of Arche, and it blew up in his face. Why was this so damn hard?!

She wanted to be left alone. So Chester slowly turned away as he shut the door.
